BASIC FUNCTION:

Monitors and maintains water treatment plant machines, condensate lines, and related equipment; conducts laboratory tests and adds treatment chemicals; maintains appropriate records and reports; takes samples of water (chilled, heating, domestic, and waste) for analysis. Reports to HVAC Superintendent or other designated supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Monitors automated treatment control system; reads meters and gauges and records readings such as pressure readings, temperatures, and flow rates (i.e., gallons/hour); checks cooling tower for algae growth and monitors water levels. Maintains and uses autosampler.

Collects samples and conducts laboratory tests (e.g., hardness, ph, chlorides, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen) on cooling tower water, heating and chilling water, wastewater, and condensate lines; sends water/condensate samples and test strips to outside/inside labs for analysis; applies chemicals and other additives (e.g., sludge conditioners; anti foulant dispersants; liquid corrosion and deposit inhibitors; algae, slime, sulfate, and bacteria inhibitors).

Maintains, lubricates, and repairs water treatment machines and equipment; maintains/cleans checks cooling towers, checks piping, and pumps for leaks; installs and repairs valves, pipe fittings, chemical feed pumps, meters, and related equipment.

Maintains and repairs water softeners; monitors salt level and adds salt as needed; backwashes filters on a regular basis.

Maintains complete records and prepares reports on tests performed, chemicals used, repairs and maintenance performed, and other observations or duties performed; submits weekly reports to supervisor and outside labs.

Drives vehicle to pick up and deliver materials and personnel.

May train and direct student employees or employees in a lower pay grade; may participate in training new employees.

Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A minimum of one year of maintenance experience (or related experience which provides comparable knowledge, skills, or abilities).

License/Certification:

Valid Ohio driver’s license with safe driving record.

Knowledge Of:

Appropriate safety practices

Skill In:

Maintenance of water treatment machines and related equipment
Use of hand and power tools

Ability To:

Learn methods of testing water samples
Demonstrate mechanical aptitude
Recognize threatening or unusual conditions and take appropriate action
Classify information according to established methods
Identify pairs of items that are the same or different
Maintain accurate records
Demonstrate physical dexterity and lift 100 pounds
Perform basic mathematics (e.g., add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and to calculate percentages)
Read (e.g., data safety sheets), write (e.g., testing reports), and accurately follow oral and written instructions
Work in high places

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

Exposed to variable temperatures and weather conditions, slippery surfaces, heights, noise, chemicals, dirt, dust, fumes, requires moderate physical exertion to include climbing, frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds (e.g., buckets of chemicals) and occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds (e.g., chemical drums); may require on- and off-campus travel.
