BASIC FUNCTION:

Direct the design and support of innovative online programs and courses, working with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. Oversee key staff involved in creating strategic courses and programs. Reports to Associate Vice President for Office of Continuing and Distance Education.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Oversee and promote development of best practices and standards for online learning.

Coordinate with AVP and Executive Director in the development and implementation of strategic goals, internal policies, and procedures.

Coordinate with Executive Director for plans on best practices and procedures in course development to be communicated to related departments and units of the university.

Provide direct supervision to a team of Educational Technology Designers and Instructional Designers in creating, maintaining, and improving online courses.

Create and maintain oversight of a Learning Management System (LMS) course template for use across the university to encourage consistency in online delivery.

In coordination with Executive Director, oversee the creation and delivery of training materials and workshops for faculty on best practices in course creation and delivery using the LMS.

Guide online course development policy and training related to technology and maintenance for online learning staff and developers.

Train and onboard online learning staff in current course development best practices.

Work directly with faculty on online course/program planning, development, and delivery.

Act as primary contact with IT to make decisions on ET uses in online learning to unify support across university.

Evaluate quality of online course development using standardized rubrics.

Work with AVP on special projects involving innovation in online education and coordinate on budgetary issues.

May serve on various committees.

Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in instructional design, instructional technology, communication technology, or a related field of study. Five years of experience in a combination of areas, such as: instructional technology, instructional design, faculty development, institutional or curriculum assessment, higher education instruction, and higher education online instruction; to include two years of administrative experience, consisting of managing multiple projects, working with a learning management system (LMS), and directing and supervising staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

Quality Matters Certified Peer Reviewer/Master Reviewer.

Knowledge Of:

Instructional design, educational technology, online pedagogy *

Staff development procedures and processes

Project and process planning *

Technical support and management issues*

Distance learning technologies and processes *

Current and upcoming best practices and strategies in online teaching *

Adult learning theories

Skill In:

Developing and implementing a strategic plan for online course design and development with measurable outcomes

Written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills

Recognizing and addressing design and implementation problems

Organizing information and projects

Adhering to deadlines

Ability To:

Provide guidance for course development efforts *

Provide leadership and direction

Analyze and develop a variety of problem-solving techniques to assess needs and the ability to determine alternative viable courses of action *

Implement staff training and problem solving

Work independently and as part of a team

Maintain a high customer-focus with contacts

Multi-task while managing multiple projects and assignments to meet deadlines within budget
