BASIC FUNCTION:

Provide leadership for the Office of Safety and Community Care within University Housing. Assist with coordination of department-wide policies, procedures, and strategies. Reports to Director, Residence Life.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Provide leadership for University Housing’s case management processes, including oversight of cases related to conduct and CARE concerns, as well as referrals to hall staff, the Office of Student Conduct, and KSUPD.

Provide administrative leadership and technical expertise to University Housing and to campus partners in managing conduct & CARE case management database.

Maintain departmental records related to conduct and CARE concerns; analyze data and develop reports related to these records.

Report out on case management efforts to internal and external stakeholders.

Collaborate with various university offices including, but not limited to, Office of Student Conduct, Fire Prevention, and Kent State University Police Services.

Represent University Housing at hearing panels with the Office of Student Conduct.

Coordinate collaborative weekly meetings with various university departments.

Provide consultation and guidance to Residence Hall Directors, Assistant Residence Hall Directors, and Assistant Directors on conduct and CARE cases.

Assist with building and managing the Counselors in Residence program.

Directly intervene with students in crisis. Utilize on-campus resources to make appropriate referrals to students who require assistance.

Train unclassified and student staff on student conduct, restorative justice processes, and mental health topics.

Meet with students to issue behavioral contracts.

Oversee check in and check out processes to include collecting and transporting of abandoned property.

Supervise unclassified and student staff within the Office of Safety and Community Care.

Manage budget for the Office of Safety and Community Care.

Create and maintain applicable manuals related to conduct, residence hall policies, CARE, and emergency response procedures.

Serve in second-level on-call duty rotation, providing crisis intervention guidance as situations arise. Utilize on-campus resources to make appropriate referrals to students who need and/or require assistance.

Assist in establishing and implementing departmental goals and objectives.

Serve on related department, division, university committees, and task forces (i.e., SART (Sexual Assault Response Team), CARE team).

Assist in evaluation of all related processes, programs and initiatives.

Participate as needed in key initiative(s) and special projects within the unit as assigned by supervisor.

Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in higher education, counseling, social work or related human services field. Six years of progressively responsible experience in Student Affairs (advising, residence life, campus safety, conflict resolution/mediation, and/or student conduct). Able to work non-traditional hours.

Preferred Qualifications:

Staff supervision experience

Previous experience working with individuals with mental health issues

Experience responding to crises; crisis intervention training or exposure

Conflict resolution or mediation training

Technical understanding of case management software

Knowledge Of:

Student Development Theory
Risk assessment and crisis management
Restorative justice practices and conflict resolution
Safety practices and concerns in higher education setting
Legal issues in higher education; i.e. Title IX, FERPA, and the Clery Act

Skill In:

Personal computer applications (i.e. Microsoft Suite) with advanced proficiency with word processing, database, spreadsheet, email, and online calendaring programs
Written communication and interpersonal skills
Conflict resolution and/or mediation
Time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Supervision of others
Report writing and documentation
Development and facilitation of training programs
Utilization of applicable software

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

Incumbent must be able to communicate with others. Incumbent may be required to travel from building to building frequently and off campus occasionally.
